Dynamic Cost-o¤sets of Prescription Drug Expenditures: Panel Data Analysis Using a Copula-based Hurdle Model
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents a new copula-based approach for analyzing panel data in which (1) the observed multivariate outcomes are a mixture of zeros and continuouslymeasured positives, with the zeros accounting for a nontrivial proportion of the sample; (2) both the zero and positive outcomes show state dependence and dynamic interdependence (cross-equation lagged dependence); and (3) the zeros and the positives display contemporaneous association. The copula-based approach is especially appealing because the contemporaneous associations may involve asymmetric dependence. We apply our methodology to the analysis of cost-o¤sets between prescription drug and other non-drug healthcare expenditures using data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey. There is evidence of modest cost-o¤sets of expenditures on prescribed drugs. JEL codes: C51, C33, I11

Dynamic Analysis of the Impact of Military Expenditure on Economic Growth in Oil and Non-Oil Countries in the Middle East
Middle East is a strategic region because of its abundant oil reserves, hostile struggles among the countries, and threat of the radical groups. The countries of this region spend a large amount of their annual budgets on buying weapons and war armaments. The purpose of this paper is to study the impact of military expenditures on economic growth of oil and non-oil Middle East countries by a dy...
متن کاملPersistence in Medicare Prescription Drug Expenditures by Treatment Class
The chronic nature of many prescription drugs used by Medicare beneficiaries suggests that adverse selection could pose a problem in the market for stand-alone prescription drug plans that were created under the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003. Using panel data on the Medicare population from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, we find that prescription drug expenditures are less concentra...
متن کاملHurdle, Inflated Poisson and Inflated Negative Binomial Regression Models for Analysis of Count Data with Extra Zeros
In this paper, we propose Hurdle regression models for analysing count responses with extra zeros. A method of estimating maximum likelihood is used to estimate model parameters. The application of the proposed model is presented in insurance dataset. In this example, there are many numbers of claims equal to zero is considered that clarify the application of the model with a zero-inflat...
متن کاملComparison of the Effects of Public and Private Health Expenditures on the Health Status: a Panel Data Analysis in Eastern Mediterranean Countries
Background Health expenditures are divided in two parts of public and private health expenditures. Public health expenditures contain social security spending, taxing to private and public sectors, and foreign resources like loans and subventions. On the other hand, private health expenditures contain out of pocket expenditures and private insurances. Each of these has different effects on the ...
متن کاملAnalysis of the simultaneous effects of renewable energy consumption and GDP, using Dynamic Panel Data
In the recent years, renewable energy sources are an important component of world energy consumption. GDP is one of the main measures of a country’s economic activity. Most of the studies examine the impact of renewable energy consumption on GDP with single equation model and the others use dynamic panel data. Since the Granger causality analysis’s findings of this paper establish bidirectional...
